Biography

Adams Archibald KCMG PC QC was a Male parent of Confederation / était united nations Père de la Confédération.

Adams George Archibald, one of the Fathers of Confederation, was a lawyer, office holder, politician and gauge; born 3 May 1814 in Truro, Nova Scotia, second son of Samuel Archibald and Elizabeth Archibald. He married Elizabeth Archibald Burnyeat one June 1843, and they had one son, who died at age 14, and three daughters; died xiv December 1892.

Adams George Matthew Archibald was born May iii, 1814, the son of Samuel Archibald and Elizabeth Archibald of Truro, Nova Scotia^{[2] [3]}

Educated at Pictou Academy, he articled in constabulary, and was called to the Nova Scotia bar in January 1839. He exercise law in Truro, Nova Scotia. Like many family unit members of the time, he sought public office to further his legal career. Beginning in 1836 and over the following decade, he was a justice of the peace, school commissioner, registrar and judge.

On June 6, 1843, he married Elizabeth A Burnyeat, the girl of Reverend John Burnyeat and Lavinia Dickson of Truro, Nova Scotia. The wedding was published in the Halifax Times on 6 june 1843 ^[3]. Their children'south birth dates are recorded at St. John's Anglican Church in Truro^[3], inclluding:

1. Joanna. A, born May 27, 1846^[four], who married Colonel Francis Duke Laurie^{[5] [6] [3]}
2. Adams George, born May 29, 1847, who died October 19, 1861, at the age of 14^{[7] [3]}
3. Elizabeth Alice "Lily", born November 16, 1849^[iv], who married Rt. Rev. Llewellyn Jones^{[8] [nine]}
4. Mary Lavinia, born September 30, 1862^[4], who married Rev. Reginald Thomas Heygate^[10]

In 1851, Adams George Archibald was elected to the Nova Scotia Legislature as a fellow member of the Reform (later Liberal) party, representing Colchester County. He became solicitor general in 1856 and Liberal party leader in 1863. A firm proponent of a rail link with the Canadas, he supported Confederation after attending the Charlottetown and Quebec conferences in 1864. He was one of six Nova Scotian delegates to the London conference in 1866. In recognition of his support for Confederation, he was appointed Secretary of State for the provinces in Sir John A. Macdonald's first federal chiffonier.

In 1870 he was sworn in as the kickoff lieutenant-governor of Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. He accepted the appointment on the condition that he be appointed to Nova Scotia'southward Supreme Court later on he had completed his term. Although he briefly served as a approximate in 1873, he resigned to become lieutenant-governor of the province, a position he held until 1883^[4].

In 1883, Archibald was awarded an honorary doctorate in law past King's Higher in London, and appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) on half-dozen June 1885^[11]. He co-founded the Nova Scotia Historical Club in 1878 and became its president in 1886. In 1888 he won the Conservative seat in Colchester Canton, nevertheless poor health prevented him from seeking re-election in 1891.^[12]

At the time of the 1891 Canada Census, the Archibalds were enumerated in Truro, along with two domestic servants and a 14-year old clerk. Archibald was listed every bit Sir Adams, a barrister^[thirteen]

Sir Adams George Archibald died Dec 14, 1892, and was buried at Robie Street Cemetery, Truro.^[14]
